In the finest tradition of Internet Commenters, let me be the first to note that, at the time of writing, the score of The Mediocre Bowl, the game between 7-8 San Diego and 8-7 Denver for championship of the AFC West, is 52-21 San Diego. It turns out that even my esteemed coblogger’s default ‘home teams suck!’ attitude is right sometimes, tonight most decidedly being one of those times. Looks like we have our first 8-8 division champ, and the 8-8 Chargers will be playing next weekend, while the 11-5 Patriots will be at home, resting on their arrogant, cheating laurels.
Honestly, I don’t mind the divisional breakdown of the playoffs. On some level, it would be clearly fairer and better for competetive balance for the best teams to be in the playoffs. On the other hand, as far as ‘unfairness in football playoff systems’ go, the NFL’s system roughly 867,320 times fairer than the BCS, so I’m not going to get too worried about it.
