Citizenship (OR I must be missing something)

Sen. Obama was in Berlin last week (you may have heard something about that). While he was there, he apparently referred to himself as a “citizen of the world.”

Matt collects some disapproving comments, the essential gist of which is “America is not part of the world.”

Why is this even an issue? I’m pretty sure we share this planet, this world, with hundreds of countries, with billions of people, every one of which is a citizen of the world. What is the big deal if someone chooses to underscore the interrelationships of everyone on this earth.
